Ben Burgess supplies the first Grimme 3rd generation Varitron 220 Harvester to Stratton Streles Estates
At Ben Burgess, we’re proud to support forward-thinking farming businesses with the very latest machinery. This season, Stratton Streles Estates (SSE) in Norfolk became the first business in the UK to operate the new Grimme Varitron 220 self-propelled potato harvester – supplied by our Aylsham branch.
A Long-Term Partnership
SSE has a rich history in potato production, dating back to the late 1960s, and is now into its third generation of family ownership. Over the years, we’ve built a strong working relationship with the estate, supporting its fleet with reliable machinery and trusted service. The investment in the Varitron 220 marks SSE’s fourth potato harvester to date, reflecting both the growth of their business and their commitment to quality.
Why the Varitron 220?
With 65% of its crop bound for supermarket shelves and 35% for processing, SSE needed a machine capable of handling both delicate and bulk potatoes. The Varitron 220’s gentle crop handling and low damage levels were key factors in the decision, helping to ensure a consistent skin finish for premium supermarket produce.
On the pre-pack side, SSE supplies Greenvale, who pack for Sainsbury’s, the Co-op, Aldi, and Lidl, while they also supply Morrisons through Nene Potatoes. On the processing side, SSE supplies McCain’s and Birdseye.

Backed by Local Support
Dealer support was an important consideration for SSE, and our Aylsham team was proud to deliver and commission the machine just a few miles from the farm. With decades of experience supplying and servicing Grimme equipment, we’re committed to ensuring the new Varitron 220 performs at its best throughout the season and beyond.
Setting the Benchmark
As the first UK operator of the new Varitron 220, Stratton Streles Estates is leading the way in running this latest machine from Grimme. We’re delighted to have played a part in bringing the machine to British fields and look forward to supporting the farm as it continues to deliver high-quality produce for generations to come.
